Plain of Exclusion
Exclusion gives rise to a precise fear: that of counting for no one. Unlike loneliness, which remains a state of the present hour, here what prevails is the sensation that others inhabit a dimension to which one has no access, and that the world carries on without registering one's presence. It is a more radical condition than being ignored, because being ignored still presupposes a gesture directed at oneself.
Scholars of social pain have observed that rejection and marginalisation activate the same brain regions as physical suffering. Those in its grip do not seek company. They seek proof of existing for someone.
Onirika has given this condition a geography. The Plain of Exclusion is a flat, shelterless expanse that reshapes itself for each person who crosses it. Here the demand to be seen accelerates one's own disappearance: the figures scattered across the field dissolve more quickly before whoever raises their voice, and grant a little substance to whoever has stopped asking for recognition. It is a place that answers indifference by returning it.
The ground changes consistency underfoot: sandy and dusty for those who feel lost, metallic for those who stiffen, mud for those who let the fear pass through them. It is opaque, run through by livid veins that surface here and there like traces of ancient paths, or like illusions of direction. The sky rests almost on the ground, without depth; the horizon is a gnawed line that trembles, as if reality too were trying to vanish.
The silence is deliberate. Every step produces a muffled thud, as if something absorbed the echo before it was born, and even breathing arrives dampened. Scattered at irregular distances stand figures: motionless human shapes, turned in different directions, none towards the explorer. Some are fixed in unfinished gestures — a raised hand, a face half-turned, a decision left halfway. Others are barely perceptible, mists a little denser. On approach they vanish, with the discretion by which a dream is forgotten on waking.
Marks remain on the ground: circles traced by trembling hands, words scratched with fingernails or a stone, almost all beginning with "why" and ending broken off. Others walked here before, and none left a road. In the distance stands a structure resembling a windowless school building: the smooth grey walls reflect images that do not belong to the present — children laughing, faces known and unidentifiable, familiar and fleeting moments. The closer one draws, the more the reflections distort, until the building becomes anonymous again.
The whole space seems built to produce the sensation of not being seen. At times one senses something watching from afar, with the sole purpose of confirming a distance already established. One stops being transparent the instant that, beyond the field, a gaze registers us again.
// Landscape behavior
The Plain is not merely a mental state. It is living matter, and it reacts.
Resonance of the step. If a collector retraces the same stretch several times, the ground retains the footprints in stable form; seen from above they seem to compose sentences, not always in known languages. Some read them as messages from the Excluded, others as psychic illusions of the Domain.
Mirrors of absence. At irregular intervals, surfaces as smooth as still water rise from the ground. They reflect the landscape and return the empty field, without the explorer, even when one looks directly into them. The more one insists, the more the suspicion grows of not really existing.
Echoes of Elsewhere. In certain spots, remaining silent, one hears voices. They are voices external to the Domain: scraps of real conversations, sentences someone spoke years before — "you're not enough", "better not to bother you", "there's no place for you". The sources stay invisible and the words never repeat.
// Effects on the collector
The Plain presents no immediate physical danger, and this is precisely what makes it insidious: the threat is internal and grows with time spent there.
Dimming of the self. A slow anaesthesia of identity sets in. Memories weaken, motives blur; the collector still knows what they came to do, but loses the why. Every action seems less justified, further from one's own sense of existing.
Disappearance of recognition. Every attempt to interact with the shapes fails. Shouting, weeping, calling gets no answer; if anything, emotional intensity dissolves them faster, as though the demand to be seen accelerated their vanishing. First frustration follows, then apathy: at a certain point the explorer too stops trying.
Introverted friction. After some hours the mind begins to produce obsessive thoughts about real episodes of exclusion — people, places, situations of rejection surface as brief visions. This is the point at which the Domain does its work: it brings a fear already lived back to the surface and amplifies it.
// Mission challenges
The collector enters the Plain to extract the Iridescent Matter left over from dreams of exclusion. The working conditions are particular.
Residue without form. The fragments have no visible appearance: they are felt as a pressure behind the forehead or a sudden chill along the back. They let themselves be gathered when one stops seeking them with direct attention.
Reaction to gathering. Every residue extracted alters the landscape: the Plain responds with visual illusions — usually the face of whoever excluded the collector, in rare cases the collector themselves in the act of excluding someone else.
Non-linear time. An hour spent inside may correspond to a day outside, or the reverse, and this makes it hard to plan multiple missions on the same window. One returns from the Plain rarely with the set objective, often with the measure of how many times, outside, one has been on the other side.
