Bridge of Shadows

The passage is in itself a neutral stretch: the moment in which one leaves one condition to enter another. It becomes fear when what one crosses casts doubt on the continuity of the one who crosses — when one fears, that is, not arriving on the other side as the same person. Every transition asks one to let go of what gave coherence before having received what will give it afterwards, and in that interval one is suspended, no longer the person from before and not yet the one that follows.

Outside Onirika it is the threshold of rites of passage, the moment in which one identity is dismantled so that another may form. Whoever fears it resists change and tries to cross while remaining intact, and it is this resistance that blocks them in the middle.

The Bridge of Shadows is not approached: it is already there the instant one crosses an inner threshold — a step too uncertain, one glance back too many. It stretches ahead like a black line cut into the landscape, without railings or foundations, over a void that escapes all measure. The Bridge does not conclude but breaks off, and whoever walks it must choose how to land: whoever accepts their own transformation crosses it, while whoever demands to arrive identical to how they set out stays walking within themselves.

The surface is narrow, more than it seems, and keeping one's balance costs a continual effort even where the Bridge is still. Some stretches are smooth as worn bone, others rough and hold the soles; every step returns a different vibration, as if the structure analysed intentions before letting one proceed. The path curves without one noticing, and turning becomes gradually harder, because the direction just travelled dissolves into the dark and gives way to an alien landscape. The more one walks it, the more one forgets where one came from, and why.

The light around stays ambiguous, neither dawn nor dusk: a violet glow lights the track and leaves the void at the sides in darkness. The air is warm and the breath condenses all the same. Every so often a shadow crosses the Bridge in the opposite direction, weightless, and in that instant the collector feels a memory that belongs to another, as if for a moment someone inhabited them. At the margins move thread-like, translucent shadows that communicate by resonance: a feeling rises and vanishes in a few seconds — fear, sorrow, shame, euphoria.

In certain spots the Bridge thins to a suspended thread of water or a slab of cracked glass; elsewhere it forks without signs, and every choice leads back always to the same point, which meanwhile has changed: what shifts is the perception of oneself, while the place remains. Towards the end, when it seems one is touching ground, something is always missing — a hold, a word, an answer. And one must jump anyway.

Whoever reaches the end of the Bridge is already someone else; the only choice that remains is how to land.

// Landscape behavior

Variable morphology. The Bridge constantly changes form: gothic arch, thread of water, ribbon of light, worn Tibetan walkway. Its appearance depends on the Domain towards which it leads and, at times, on the still-active fears of whoever crosses it.

Progressive contamination. As one walks it, the Bridge absorbs fragments of the Domain left behind and anticipates the next. The last shadows of the Crater may climb back onto the collector's shoulders while ahead the architectures of the Citadel already take shape, or of the Forest, or of something never seen before.

Symbolic fracture. In many spots the Bridge breaks off for a short stretch and asks for a small jump, a symbolic choice, an act of trust. They are tests of the willingness to change: whoever refuses the jump stays.

// Effects on the collector

Dissolution of the identity centre. During the crossing consciousness decentres. Objectives, memories, motives — everything that held the person together frays, and the collector enters a liminal state that makes them at once vulnerable and permeable: the next Domain will receive them open.

Injection of alien memory. The Bridge is a thin space, receptive to memories that come from others: scraps of other collectors' experiences, reflections of consciousnesses never met. These fragments blend with one's own memories and can contaminate one's personal history.

Forced contemplation. In the suspended time of the Bridge many lose the capacity to act. They stop, they stay, they watch, and they slip into an induced meditation in which spontaneous thought is confused with the thought suggested by the landscape. Without a firm inner anchor, the collector sees the exit move away.

// Mission challenges

Absence of gathering. The Bridge is sterile by definition and contains no Iridescent Matter. Every residue gathered before or after, however, leaves the passage changed: it shifts form, tone, sometimes colour, as if filtered by an alchemical process.

Derailment of the route. Whoever lingers too long loses their inner orientation and may come out in a Domain different from the one foreseen. The Bridge lets itself be crossed only by whoever accepts to transform; the will to stay as before misaligns the inner world from the narrative one.

The key of transition. Sometimes the Bridge manifests only to whoever possesses a key, which is rarely an object: a sentence said at the right moment, an act performed without witnesses, a reconciled memory. Its absence leaves the passage open but makes it illusory, and the collector will believe they are crossing while continuing to move within themselves.
